Non-linear seismic demand analysis and qualification of the main polar crane inside a concrete dome structure


Plant enhancements required upgrade to an existing polar crane. The objective of the project was to re-analyze the polar crane for structural and seismic loads associated with all proposed configuration upgrades.


This project involved creation of the non-linear model of the polar crane in order to perform structural analysis of the crane allowing for changes associated with crane modifications and upgrade. Geometric non-linearities included tension-only sling as well as possible uplift at the crane rails during a severe seismic event.
